Fort Bend Christian Academy in Detail

Fort Bend Christian Academy is an independent, college preparatory, co-educational day school for students in grades PreK-12. Founded in 1987 as the Sugar Creek Baptist Church School, an elementary school which used the facilities of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church, the institution has grown considerably in both scope and facilities. As it expanded to include the full range of PreK-12 education, it moved to an independent campus and dropped its Baptist affiliation in favor of a more all-inclusive Christian affiliation. The school officially changed its name to Fort Bend Christian Academy in 2011.

Originally affiliated with the Sugar Creek Baptist Church, the school switched to a non-denominational Christian affiliation in 2011. The change was meant to reflect the school’s mission of “serving the entire Christian community.” Fort Bend Christian Academy places a strong emphasis on Christian values and the Bible. Students in every grade take a level-appropriate Bible study class, and all subject matter is presented from the perspective of a Biblical worldview. One of the goals of the FBCA curriculum is to help students to develop this Biblical worldview. However, the school does admit students of all faiths.

Fort Bend Christian Academy is situated on a 35-acre campus bordered by 7th Street and Lakeview Drive in Sugar Land. The surrounding neighborhood includes both industrial and residential areas, multiple churches, and a public library. Campus facilities include an elementary and middle school building and a separate high school building, as well as ample accommodations for the school’s athletic programs. The Athletic Complex built in 2009 incorporates a track stadium and a football field with synthetic turf; the school also boasts stadia for baseball and softball. Practice fields for football and soccer are also present on the campus.

The ideal candidate for admission to Fort Bend Christian Academy is an excellent student who possesses “good moral character.” Students can apply for admission to Fort Bend Christian Academy through the online application provided on the school website.

Required application materials include

  1. A copy of a birth certificate or passport,
  2. Immunization records,
  3. Scores from standardized or achievement tests (if applicable),
  4. Information about student special needs and special testing, and recommendations.
  5. For students in grades 4 and below, only one recommendation form is required.
  6. For students in grades 5 and above, four recommendations are required: one from a math teacher, one from an English teacher, one from the student’s pastor, and one from a guidance counselor.

Additionally, prospective students must take an entrance exam. For students in grades 5 and above, this requirement can be fulfilled solely by the ISEE exam; for students in grades 4 and below, this requirement can be fulfilled solely by a school-administered test. When all application materials have been submitted, both the student and the parents will be interviewed. The school’s Declaration of Values, available on their website, will be discussed in the parent interview. While school visits are not required, they are available and can be requested online through the school website.

General Academic has more than 16 years of experience helping thousands of students prepare for the ISEE. Inquire about private tutoring or register for ISEE prep courses starting December 21st at our Rice Village Study Lounge.

The curriculum of Fort Bend Christian Academy differs from that of many other private schools in its strong emphasis on the Bible. From the elementary level onwards, students take a required Bible study class each year, and the whole of the curriculum is presented from the perspective of a “Biblical worldview.”

Fort Bend Christian Academy offers students opportunities to accelerate their learning. In the seventh and eighth grades within the middle school division, students have the option of taking an advanced track in math and English. In the high school division, students can elect to take honors, honors dual enrollment, or AP courses as alternatives to regular-level classes. The high school offers a total of nine AP courses, which are available to juniors and seniors. The two dual enrollment courses, both in English, are offered in partnership with Houston Baptist University and are likewise available to juniors and seniors.

In order to graduate from the high school division of Fort Bend Christian Academy, students must complete the following requirements: 4 credits of English, 4 credits of math, 4 credits of science, 4 credits of social studies, 4 credits of Bible, 2.5 credits of electives, 2 credits of foreign language, 1 credit of fine arts, 1 credit of physical education, and 0.5 credits of communications.

Depending on the nature of a student’s special needs, Fort Bend Christian Academy may or may not have the facilities to give him or her the education and care he or she needs. If a student’s needs go beyond what the school is equipped to meet, the student will be denied admission for his or her best interests.

Fort Bend Christian Academy permits additional testing time and/or preferential seating in the classroom for students who have conditions which might otherwise put them at an academic disadvantage.

Fort Bend Christian Academy offers three foreign languages: Spanish, French, and American Sign Language. Spanish and French are offered from the sixth grade onward, while ASL is offered from the eighth grade onward. Although the school does not offer AP foreign language courses, all three languages are taught through level 5 and may be taken throughout high school if the student so wishes. High school students are required to take at least two credits of foreign language.

Fine arts are integrated into the curriculum in every division of Fort Bend Christian Academy. Elementary students take both vocal and visual arts every week, and their creativity is showcased in yearly performances and in the school’s Elementary Art Show. Students also have opportunities to enter their artwork into competitions at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Fort Bend County Fair. Students in the middle school division may take electives in music, marching band, concert band, visual arts, and drama. While fine arts electives are only required for fifth graders, they are available to middle school students in any grade. On the middle school level, students in musical electives have the opportunity to perform at least once a year, and students taking drama can participate in a yearly play. Additionally, students at both the elementary and middle school levels have the option of taking guitar lessons through the school. In the high school division, at least two fine arts courses are required for graduation. The high school offers a broad selection of fine arts courses. In addition to the usual visual arts staples, students may take classes on textiles and printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, graphic design, and photography. Concert choir, symphonic band, vocal performance, and theatre are also offered. Students in musical and theatrical fine arts electives perform at least once a year.

Fort Bend Christian Academy provides its students with a variety of technological resources. In the elementary school, SmartBoards are used in the classroom. Students in the elementary and middle school divisions have access to iPad labs, where they can use school-provided tablets. Students in the high school division have access to both PCs and Macs in the school’s Learning Commons. Additionally, students whose coursework involves videography have access to a greenscreen on-campus.

As for personal technology, students are allowed to carry cell phones on campus, but they may not be used, and if they are, they may be confiscated. The exception to this is the case of high school classes which use designated apps that tie into the curriculum. In these classes, mobile phones may be used only to access the designated apps. The use of iPads and similar devices to play games and listen to music before and after school or in the lunchroom is generally permitted. Personal laptops are not permitted on campus, but students may use school computers and iPads if they follow the Information Technology Rules for Acceptable Use.

While no information is available on the extracurricular offerings of the elementary school division, middle school students can grow in leadership by participating in any of three clubs: Student Council, Student Active in Leadership Training, or the National Junior Honor Society. The high school, in turn, offers a wide range of student activities. The 30 clubs available to high school students include prestigious societies like the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta, as well as leadership opportunities like Student Council and Student Leadership Communities. Interact Club, in partnership with Rotary International, provides service opportunities for students. Other clubs at the high school level focus on academic, recreational, and fine arts interests as well as school spirit.

Students at Fort Bend Christian Academy have the opportunity to participate in competitive sports from seventh grade onward. Both girls’ and boys’ soccer and basketball programs are available, and there are coeducational programs for cross country, swimming, and track. At the high school level, there are also coeducational programs available for drum line, golf, and tennis. Additionally, baseball and football are available for boys, and cheer, softball, and volleyball are available for girls. The high school athletic teams compete within the 4A division of TAPPS, while the middle school teams compete within the Greater Houston Athletic Conference.

All parents of Fort Bend Christian Academy students automatically become members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Fellowship. Through this organization, parents can volunteer to help with school events. Fort Bend Christian Academy also encourages parents to be involved in their children’s education by providing a Christian home environment as discussed in the school’s Declaration of Values.
